A PLACE TO REMEMBER
“I thought the world was one way and I found out it isn’t.”
Letitia Lewis, brilliantly played by Journee Smollett shares this revelation after encountering a shadowy world of magic in Misha Green’s masterpiece LoveCraft Country, that takes place in America’s Jim Crow South in 1950.
It’s 2026. And I know exactly how Leti feels.
I was taught the world be a certain way, that I should be certain way — that the world would reward me for being a certain way — kind, God fearing, decent, respectable, compliant. I found out it isn’t that way.
No one is to blame. Not the world for evolving, because that’s what living things do. Not my parents, for not knowing better, because they did their best.
A better place for my attention and energy is exploring what I’m going to do with this new awareness about the world.
“There is a different way to be in the world.”
I repeat these words often. I heard it first from Laila Delia’s meditations on the app Insight Timer. An affirmation of freedom that reminds me, even when I have no control over what is happening around me, I still have power over me.
I have power within me.
I am courageous and confident and powerful, but sometimes I forget.
Sometimes fear fogs my memory.
Sometimes anxiety distracts me.
Sometimes respectability misdirects my power.
Sometimes religion says otherwise.
Sometimes traditions lie.
The truth is, it’s easy to forget how powerful I am.
What if there was a place I could go that would remind me of how powerful I am?
A place that could remind any woman, at any time, any where in the world, that she is sovereign. A place that wouldn’t let doubt, distraction or deceit surrounding the greatness of women survive. A place that would shine as a constant reminder of the innate and intuitive power inside a woman.
What music would be playing?
What art would be on the wall?
What movies would play in dark rooms?
What clothes would we wear?
What dances would be dance?
How would the food taste?
How many sips would we sip before we erupted with laughter?
How much could we inhale, before we exhale?
This is the inspiration for SHEBA and her TAMBOURINE.
Coming soon.
